The present paper studies the Byzantine belt buckles found in archaeological context on different sites in Crete. The data collected in the 34 known pieces (6 types of rigid and 3 types of articulated buckles) provides new insights on the date and distribution of the buckles, on their users and, more generally, on the daily life in the 7th-9th centuries.

An unpublished fragment of a spear-thrower of type 2 from the Grotte du Placard was recently identified in Breuil’s collection stored at the IPH, Paris. It is very similar to another fragment drawn and used by Breuil to establish his chronology of the Upper Palaeolithic, in which it is attributed to the Magdalenian III. From a morphological, morphometric and technologic point of view, it is also very much alike a spearthrower fragment of Combe-Saunière I, assigned to the Upper Solutrean.
A Hellenistic mouldmade relief bowl from the second half of the 2th century BC found in Porsuk (Southern Cappadocia) represents Odysseus offering a cup of wine to Polyphemos, surrounded by satyrs. It illustrates an episode of the only complete surviving satyric drama, The Cyclops of Euripides. Manufactured in the workshops of Antioch-on-the-Orontes, this literary bowl is exceptional on more than one count, since it reveals contacts between Northern Syria and the Anatolian plateau. It also vouches for the survival of Classical Athenian drama in the Hellenized Eastern world.
